9:00am to 12:00 noon

Aim

To equip/guide subject leads to collate the relevant information so that they are able to articulate clearly the standards of teaching and learning of reading in their school in response to the new Ofsted framework.

Audience

Two participants from each school: Head/Deputy Teacher and Subject Leaders

Event Schedule- Key note Speaker: Wayne Tennent

Wayne Tennent is a Senior Lecturer in Education at Brunel University London.  He teaches on the Primary PGCE, MA Education and Doctoral programmes.  He is interested in literacy generally, and the reading comprehension process specifically.  He has worked for a number of years with schools – both primary and secondary – developing pedagogical practices to support the teaching of reading comprehension.  Wayne has over 20 years’ experience as a teacher and still works with children on a regular basis.  His book, Understanding Reading Comprehension, was published in 2015 and will be going into its second edition next year.  His co-authored book Guiding Readers – Layers of Meaning was published in 2016 and won the United Kingdom Literacy Association (UKLA) academic book of the year award.

In this talk, Wayne will consider the complexity of text comprehension and present an alternative framework from which to consider how reading might be taught. He will also argue that the texts we use to teach reading, need to be considered more carefully, in relation to English, but also different curriculum subjects. Implications will considered in relation to the current focus on curriculum intent, implementation and impact.

Knowledge Tables

After a break, we will branch off onto six knowledge tables where an expert will discuss and share ideas and information to answer questions linked to a specific theme e.g. Early Reading. Participants will stay on each table for about 10 minutes and will rotate round.

The experts that will be hosting the knowledge tables are: English Hub and Specialist Leaders of Education (SLE)
